Paramount+’s new offering Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will have Holly Hunter lead the series as both the captain and chancellor of the Academy. In this dual role, Hunter will guide the faculty and a fresh batch of cadets through their formative years at the institution, navigating the interstellar challenges in the 32nd century.

The series, helmed by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, promises to bring a unique twist to the Star Trek universe. In an interview with Variety, the showrunners said:

“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius. To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on ‘Starfleet Academy’ is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of ‘Star Trek.’”

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be filmed on what is described as the largest contiguous set ever built for the Star Trek franchise. The production will start in Toronto this summer. The set includes an expansive academic atrium that features a variety of spaces such as an amphitheater, classrooms, a dining area, and a picturesque walkway. This setting is designed to be a central hub for the series, mirroring the complexities and dynamics of academy life.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Explores Young Adulthood and Galactic Challenges

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will explore various aspects of youth and education, from budding romances and academic pressures to the profound self-discoveries that come with young adulthood. According to Landau, the series will delve into the uncharted emotional territories of young cadets experiencing high-stakes scenarios for the first time, such as operating transporters and engaging in phaser fights.

Hunter has an illustrious career which includes nominations for her work in Broadcast News (1987), The Firm (1993), and Thirteen (2003). Her versatility is highlighted by her voice role as Elastigirl in Pixar’s The Incredibles series and her memorable part in the Coen brothers’ Raising Arizona (1987). More recently, Hunter was seen in NBC’s comedy Mr. Mayor, starring opposite Ted Danson, showing her adeptness across genres from drama to animation and comedy.

Meanwhile, the animated comedy “Lower Decks” is set to conclude after a successful five-season run. “Discovery”, the flagship of the revived Star Trek TV efforts, will also wrap up its final season soon, while Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season.
